Long Branch : People and Places

Description

Long Branch s rich and varied past makes it one of Monmouth County s most important historic places. Although much of the physical evidence of its earlier days is gone, historian Randall Gabrielan has gathered a collection of images that vividly represent the New Jersey city that became a mecca for presidents, financiers, and gamblers. In Long Branch People and Places, tour stately summer homes, visit hotels of the gilded age, and behold Long Branch s famed Ocean Pier widely considered a 19th-century engineering marvel. Through this collection of more than 200 photographs, discover how Long Branch developed into a significant resort in the 1800s, and gain insight into its business power, educational life, and spiritual being."

Instead, he suggests reforms that challenge the legitimacy of both domesecration and capitalism. The Thinking Indian : Native American Writers, 1850s-1920s

Description

This book gives an in-depth literary history focusing on the lives and works of five major Native American authors: John Rollin Ridge, Sarah Winnemucca, Simon Pokagon, Alexander Lawrence Posey, and Charles Alexander Eastman. Their writings, produced in an era characterized by severe cultural oppression, are not only milestones in the evolution of early Native American literature but also comprise a significant contribution to American letters. The literary bequest of the authors covered in this book openly contests the perennial stereotype of the Vanishing Indian.

Instead, he suggests reforms that challenge the legitimacy of both domesecration and capitalism. Sandra Visser,Thomas Williams: Anselm

Anselm

Description

Sandra Visser and Thomas Williams offer a brief, accessible introduction to the life and thought of St. Anselm (c. 1033-1109). Anselm, who was Archbishop of Canterbury for the last 16 years of his life, is unquestionably one of the foremost philosopher-theologians of the Middle Ages. Indeed he may have been the greatest Christian thinker in the 800 years between Augustine and Aquinas. His keen and rigorous thinking earned him the title 'The Father of Scholasticism.' The influence of his contributions to ethics and philosophical theology is clearly discernible in figures as various as Thomas Aquinas, John Duns Scotus, the voluntarists of the late-thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, and the Protestant Reformers. The prevalence of self-identified Anselmians - and anti-Anselmians - in contemporary philosophy of religion attests to the enduring importance of his approach to the divine nature. Visser and Williams's book falls into two main parts. The first will elucidate Anselm's metaphysics, concluding with an examination of Anselm's account of truth, which serves as a capstone for his metaphysical system. The second part focuses on Anselm's theory of knowledge. Topics considered include Anselm's general account of cognition and his odd but compelling theory of language-acquisition and the role it plays in discourse about the divine. The third section of the book is devoted to the moral life. Anselm's account of the foundations of ethics is philosophically of great interest, the authors show, because it effectively combines insights that contemporary philosophers have thought to be antithetical. In the fourth and last section, they turn to Anselm's philosophical explorations of Christian doctrine, including Redemption, the Trinity, and the Incarnation. They show how Anselm puts his metaphysical system to work in establishing the coherence of Christian doctrine and explain how his philosophical theology rests on his theory of knowledge.

Instead, he suggests reforms that challenge the legitimacy of both domesecration and capitalism. In these 100 poems Wislawa Szymborska portrays a world of astonishing diversity and richness, in which nature is wise and prodigal and fate unpredictable, if not mischievous. With acute irony tempered by a generous curiosity, she documents life's improbability as well as its transient beauty. A Shorter Guide to the Holy Spirit: Bible, Doctrine, Experience

Description

Anthony Thiselton's scholarly book The Holy Spirit - In Biblical Teaching, through the Centuries, and Today was published to wide acclaim in 2013 and received a 2014 Christianity Today Book Award. This shorter volume makes Thiselton's vast biblical-theological knowledge and brilliant insight more accessible to more readers. Review: "A lucid introduction to the doctrine of the Holy Spirit by one of the leading biblical exegetes and theologians of our time...The magisterial way in which Thiselton integrates engagement not only with the biblical and theological material but also with the current issues and debates in the church makes this resource invaluable for students and interested laypeople alike. Very highly recommended!"-Alan J. Torrance, author of Persons in Communion: Trinitarian Description and Human Participation

Hsieh then details many of the unique practices at Zappos that have made it the success it is today, such as the philosphy of allocating marketing money into the customer experience, thereby allowing repeat customers and word-of-mouth be their true form of marketing. He also explains why Zappos's main priority is company culture and his belief that once you get the culture right, everything else - great customer service, long-term branding - will happen on its own. Finally, Hsieh explains how Zappos employees actually apply the Core Values to improving their lives outside of work - and to making a difference in their communities and the world

Another Little Piece of My Heart: My Life of Rock and Revolution in the '60s

Description

In 1966, at just twenty-two, Richard Goldstein approached the Village Voice with a novel idea. 'I want to be a rock critic,' he said. 'What's that?' the editor replied. It was a logical question, since rock criticism didn't yet exist. In the weekly column he would produce for the Voice, Goldstein became the first person to write regularly in a major publication about the music that was changing everyone's lives. He believed deeply in the power of rock, and, long before it was acceptable, he championed the idea that this music was a serious art form. From his unique position in journalism, Richard Goldstein witnessed the full arc of events that shaped culture and politics in the 1960s - and participated in them, too. He toured with Janis Joplin, spent a day at the Grateful Dead house in San Francisco, got stoned with Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys, and was in the front row when Jimi Hendrix burned his first guitar at the Monterey Pop Festival. He was present for Martin Luther King's 'I Have a Dream' speech, the student uprising at Columbia and the riots at the 1968 Democratic Convention. He was challenged to a boxing match by Norman Mailer and took Susan Sontag to her first disco. Goldstein developed close relationships with several rock legends - Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison, to name two - and their early deaths came each time as a wrenching shock, fuelling his disillusionment as he watched the music he loved rapidly evolve from a communal rite into a vast industry and felt the sense of hope for radical social upheaval fade away. Another Little Piece of My Heart is an intimate memoir of the writer as a young man. It is also a sweeping personal account that no one else could provide - a deeply moving, unparalleled document of rock and revolution in America.

After a quick overview of PTSD, the first part of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for the Treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Trauma-Related Problems explains the problem of experiential avoidance as it relates to trauma and explores the verbal nature of post-traumatic stress. You'll learn the importance of mindfulness and acceptance in the ACT model, find out how to structure sessions with your clients, and examine the problem of control. The section concludes by introducing you to the idea of creative hopelessness as the starting point for creating a new, Another Little Piece of My Heart: My Life of Rock and Revolution in the '60s free download pdf workable life after trauma. " 124. Spleen The chances of stumbling across high moral values and utopian ideals don't look promising-what with Flinx playing a lawless Pied Piper to a gang of lying, thieving juvenile delinquents. But prospects really go south when Flinx runs afoul of the corrupt planet's ruthless crime king.

Maya Banks: Letting Go

Letting Go

Description

THE FIRST BOOK OF THE SURRENDER TRILOGY In her sensational Breathless Trilogy, #1 "New York Times" bestselling author Maya Banks tested the boundaries of desire. In her new trilogy, there's only one thing left to do: cross them. And never have the consequences of erotic exploration been so irresistibly inviting, so shockingly intimate, and so totally unexpected... LETTING GO Josslyn found perfection once, and she knows she'll never find it again. Now widowed, she seeks the one thing her beloved husband couldn't give her: dominance. Lonely, searching for an outlet for her grief and wanting only a brief taste of the perfection she once enjoyed, she seeks what she's looking for at an exclusive club that caters to people indulging in their most hedonistic fantasies. She never imagined that what she'd find would be the one man who's long been a source of comfort--and secret longing. Her husband's best friend. Dash has lived in an untenable position for years: in love with his best friend's wife but unwilling to act on that attraction. He'd never betray his best friend. And so he's waited in the wings, offering Joss unconditional support and comfort as she works past her grief, hoping for the day when he can offer her more. When he finds her in a club devoted to the darker edges of desire, he's furious because he thinks she has no idea what she's getting herself into. Until she explains in detail what it is she wants. What she needs. As realization sets in, he is gripped by fierce, unwavering determination. If she wants dominance, he is the only man who will introduce her to that world. He is the only man who will touch her, cherish her...love her. And the only man she'll ever submit to.

In her newest book, Mary Shomon takes readers on a quest to understand the profound influence the thyroid has on a woman's hormonal health in the perimenopause and menopause years, and discusses how undiagnosed thyroid problems may be the real culprit behind what many assume are peri/menopausal symptoms. Many women assume they're suffering from perimenopause or menopause and embark on a wild goose chase of hormone replacement, go soy crazy, start smearing themselves with yam and progesterone creams, or end up taking all sorts of herbs, from black cohosh to chasteberry. But, when the real culprit is a thyroid problem, these approaches simply don't work. And by age 60, it's estimated that as many as half of women have an underactive thyroid. Letting Go free download pdf A drop in reproductive hormones frequently triggers a thyroid slowdown - a 'thyropause' - that causes misleading symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, and depression.

Jeff Abbott: Distant Blood

Distant Blood

Description

Blood runs cold--especially in this family. Thanks to a newfound connection with his natural father, librarian Jordan Poteet is suddenly a member of a rich Texas dynasty. But a series of poison-pen letters warns him to stay away from the Goertz family reunion on a Gulf Coast island. He soon wishes he had, because his new kinfolk--four generations of them--are hiding secrets deep and dark enough to taint an entire bloodline. And an unexpected death makes it chillingly clear that the anonymous hate mail directed at Jordan isn't a joke. Ghosts of the violent past are walking. A murderer is on the move. And a terrible unfolding of tragedy has begun that will spare no one--not even Jordan himself. . . .

Opposite the simple declarative sentence, "Walter was worried" is a portrait of a very worried Walter. But wait! The letters that spell out his feelings form his facial characteristics, as well as his expression. Gradually a simple story Grossology: the Science of Rea ebook pdf unfolds: the sky grows dark, the fog rolls in, lightning lights the sky, and thunder shakes the trees; Priscilla was puzzled, Shirley was shocked, Frederick was frightened... and eventually (when the sun came out) Henry was hopeful, and Elliot ecstatic. Drastically altered after her fall at the end of HIDDEN, Neferet is now more dangerous than ever - and her quest for vengeance will wreak havoc on humans as well as Zoey and her friends. Chaos is loosed in Tulsa and the House of Night is blamed. Can Zoey stop Neferet in time to keep her anger from escalating to full-on war? Or will someone else have to step in to take the fall?

Dreambody: The Body's Role in Healing the Self

Description

Dreambody is the foundational introduction to process oriented psychology, by its founder Arnold Mindell, an MIT Physicist and Jungian Analyst. The Dreambody bridges the gaps between depth psychology, somatic psychology, spirituality, and energy based mind-body practices. "Most of the modern body work known to me is basically materialistic in outlook; even many of the Eastern teachings have taken that turn too. A viewpoint that tries to keep a balance between mind and body is very much needed. Every dream image can thus be seen as belonging to that in-between realm, referring equally to the mind and to the physiological body. I therefore hope that Dr. Mindells pioneering work will encourage more research in this still unknown realm of experience." -Marie-Louise von Franz, March, 1982 "There was a gap between depth psychology and focus on the body, as if these two perspectives on the human experience were different worlds. The Dreambody bridged it by describing an underlying process that is both dream and body, and this opened up whole new perspectives..." -Serge Prengel, Editor, Somatic Perspectives on Psychotherapy

Keeping Your Child in Mind: Overcoming Defiance, Tantrums, and Other Everyday Behavior Problems by Seeing the World Through Your Child's Eyes

Description

Being understood by someone you love is one of the most powerful feelings, at all ages. For a young child, it is the most important of all experiences because it allows the child's mind and sense of self to grow. In the midst of the perennial concerns parents bring to Dr. Claudia Gold, she shows the magical effect of seeing a problem from their child's point of view. Most parenting books teach parents what to do to solve behavior problems, but Dr. Gold shows parents how to be with a child. Crises are defused when children feel truly heard and validated; this is how they learn to understand, and, eventually, control themselves. Dr. Gold's insightful guide uses new research in developmental psychology and vivid stories from her practice to show parents how to keep a child in mind and deepen this central relationship in their lives.

And the Weak Suffer What They Must?: Europe's Crisis and America's Economic Future

Description

A titanic battle is being waged for Europe's integrity and soul, with the forces of reason and humanism losing out to growing irrationality, authoritarianism, and malice, promoting inequality and austerity. The whole world has a stake in a victory for rationality, liberty, democracy, and humanism. In January 2015, Yanis Varoufakis, an economics professor teaching in Austin, Texas, was elected to the Greek parliament with more votes than any other member of parliament. He was appointed finance minister and, in the whirlwind five months that followed, everything he had warned about-the perils of the euro's faulty design, the European Union's shortsighted austerity policies, financialized crony capitalism, American complicity and rising authoritarianism-was confirmed as the "troika" (the European Central Bank, International Monetary Fund, and European Commission) stonewalled his efforts to resolve Greece's economic crisis. Here, Varoufakis delivers a fresh look at the history of Europe's crisis and America's central role in it. He presents the ultimate case against austerity, proposing concrete policies for Europe that are necessary to address its crisis and avert contagion to America, China, and the rest of the world. With passionate, informative, and at times humorous prose, he warns that the implosion of an admittedly crisis-ridden and deeply irrational European monetary union should, and can, be avoided at all cost.
